I grew up taking trips to our family cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and ever since I’ve associated summer with this sanctuary on the Escanaba river. Surrounded by evergreen forests, sandy red soil, and wildflowers I only saw up north, I was transported to a place of ease. My agenda consisted of adventuring in the river, snacking while reading a new book, and after-dinner Jeep rides.
I wanted to recreate some of that summer magic of being in the solace of nature with the excitement of nothing to do but create your own fun—cabin optional.
Not only do the outdoors make such a deep impact on your sense of place, but the cozy interiors of cabins and cottages further bring you to a place of respite. A cabin complete with natural wood wall panelings, colorful plaids, and a set of homewares (special dishes, outdoor gear, vintage sweaters) provides the comfort of home with the novelty of a getaway.
I curated these collages with nostalgia in mind but also included some fun, modern interpretations of decor both vintage and contemporary. This inspiration translates well to summer in the city or wherever you find yourself when you need a dose of an escape. FYI, there are some bonus finds that aren’t in the collages. Enjoy!
Picnics and Painting
Dining al fresco, whether it is a family dinner or a bowl of berries by the river, is more fun with a few home touches. I found some sweet vintage linens that would be perfect for an outdoor dining situation. I also found a chic Japanese watercolor set, inspired by my grandmother who often painted at the cabin!

Snack Time
Snacks are best enjoyed with both culinary and dining utensil accoutrements. Enamelware always screams “up north” or camping to me. I’m dying at this little sardine fork, and wine deserves it’s own basket too. Not to mention this Morrow blanket is on par with the fun colors and patterns that I associate with cabin bedding.

Cool Mornings by the River
Chilly mornings that quickly evolve into the heat of the summer; morning buttered toast to midday popsicles. Ah, the simple menu of childhood.
I’ve been loving all these butter molds I’ve been seeing on social media and in this Vogue article (butter, even Vogue loves you). I found this seashell silicone mold amongst a plethora of other options on Etsy.
Really digging the modern quilting of this Etsy seller!
Aperitivo Hour
Nothing like a little pre-dinner drink and snacks curled up on the porch with your favorite blanket and person. The fish cornbread molds cannot be missed either!
Lawn Games and Lunch
Bocce ball or croquet? How about a third option, to just post-up and watch the game unfold in the sun. I am loving this incredible vintage tablecloth that is basically the tablecloth version of a Doen shift dress. What’s not to love?! Not to mention—Ferm Living’s gingham collection is also very Doen-coded.
Handmade Black Walnut Salad Bowl
Enjoy these cabin picks and "up north” inspiration!
